Child Psychology - Counselling available ages 8-18

Parental Guidance (especially for children under 8)  is sometimes needed when a child's general mood or behaviour become a matter of concern. Such issues might manifest in a change in academic performance, playground difficulties, being withdrawn in a way of being less interactive than before, anger or tearfulness. Such behaviours are often indicators of serious issues which parents may not always be aware of.

Children who sleep poorly, difficulty with eating, stomach pains, who tend to demonstrate impulsive behaviour and aggressive outbursts, violence towards others, overactive children or overly weepy children may be in distress to the point where they require psychological care. Very often it is people outside of the family who may point it out and others like teachers may be well positioned to make objective observations about a child's academic and social and personal wellbeing. Their professional opinions are valuable.

Children often lack the language skills to express themselves and their own emotional intelligence is still developing. For these reasons - and others - parents who are concerned about their children's behaviour, academic performance or general wellbeing often seek professional counselling.

When children disclose sensitive information parents need to respond in sensitive ways. To this end the Children's First Policy strongly underpins my practice.

I do Play Therapy using miniature objects like furniture and people, plastic animals and various small toys which help your child to express their thoughts, fears, wishes and to give them a way of making sense of their world and their lives in a childlike manner.

Sand Tray Therapy is versatile in allowing an older child or young adolescent to create scenes in the sand of whatever they need to express when words fail.

Where my training and skills are inadequate for the needs of the child, I would make a referral to an agency that would best meet your needs of both child and parent(s) or guardian.
